Well first off, the following guide is all of my own opinion. I'm not
saying that every single one of these things should be followed exactly.
Whether you choose to use or not use it is your own concern.
General Internet
- Must haves for computers accessing the Internet:
1. An Anti-Virus program. I recommend: www.freeav.com
2. A firewall program. XP does have it's own firewall, but it's really
a piece of shit. You should turn XP's firewall off and get your own
program. Norton and ZoneAlarm get my recommendations. Don't type
confidential information on the Internet if you don't have a
firewall.
3. A pop-up blocker. The Google toolbar is widely used for this.
You could also switch to a browser that has an internal pop-up block such as
FireFox.
- What does (insert acronym here) mean?
lol - laughing out loud
rotflmao - rolling on the floor laughing my ass off
lmao - laughing my ass off
wtf - what the fuck
stfu - shut the fuck up
IRC - internet relay chat
IIRC - if I recall/remember correctly IMO - in my opinion IMHO - in my honest/humble opinion ISP - internet service provider MMORPG - Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game RPG - Role Playing Game
- I heard that (insert anything you heard about
here). Is it true?
No.....just no. If you didn't read something from an official website,
then don't fucking believe that it is a fact. This is also true with
any rumor you hear from a friend. Even if there are a bunch of people
who say something, don't believe it until you here something from an
official source.
- What is warez?
It is software, movies, games, and mp3s that have been illegally copied and
made available on the internet for free. FairLight and Class are some
of the warez groups that provide copies of games. It is all illegal.
- Outwar, KingsofChaos, and other spam...
Don't spam. Just don't spam.
For those who don't know what spam is, spam is advertising something in an
annoying way. Junkmail, e-mail junkmail, repeatedly pasting a link in
a chat room, and pasting a link on a message board are all forms of spam.
- What is wrong with AOL?
AOL is a piece of shit ISP. The millions of people that are using it
are mostly stupid Internet newbies. Their
ISP service is shit. If you can only get dial-up, go with any company
that is well known such as Earthlink and MSN.
- What broadband connection should I get?
If you want the fastest and cheapest, you should check your cable
company's service. If your cable area, called a 'node,' is good, you
will get around 100-200k downloads. If you get less than that, it is
better to go with DSL.
For DSL, you should do a search on
www.dslreports.com
for your local DSL providers. It is good if you can find a reliable third-party provider, but don't sign
up with unknown companies that offer very cheap prices. AOL is also a
big no-no.
- Information on the Internet
Any information you find on a 'free' site such as Angelfire,
Geocities, etc. should be taken with a grain of salt(this means don't
believe all the information is true).
- Chain E-Mails
These things are incredibly stupid. They start out with some bullshit
story, and then they tell you to forward it to so-and-so for some superstitious
reason. If you are bored and want to annoy some people, then go
ahead. Personally, I hate this bullshit stuff.
Anime Fansubs
- Has (insert anime here) been released yet?
Updated: With the introduction of bit torrent, there has been an exponential
growth of anime leechers. That means even more people asking this
question across more and more message boards and chat rooms. To find
out if a release is out now, just simply go their damn website or check the
normal BT sites like
AnimeSuki,
BakaUpdates, and the
MIRCX BT page. Every respectable group has their own
website now, and you should be smart enough to just check these places if
you think IRC is too complicated for a lazy ass like yourself.
Old IRC answer:
Don't ever ask such a question! Just check the fucking topic! In
the Invision script, all you have to do is right click in the channel's
window and click on "View Topic." If you're using another
script just type "//topic #" without the quotation marks. If
the anime is very popular, then it will be very obvious when it has been
released as hundreds of others will be typing triggers for it.
- Are fansubs legal?
No. Every fansub is illegal. Doesn't matter if it is licensed or
not. It is still illegal. Whether you consider un-licensed
titles okay to get or not is your own choice, but they are as illegal as
licensed anime titles online. I get licensed and unlicensed titles
(online)
personally, but I still go out and buy DVDs of animes I really like such as
Evangelion, Onegai Teacher, and Fruits Basket.
- Dubs vs. Subs (a.k.a. Oh noes!! My favorite anime got
licensed. Anime must be in Japanese to be good!! Stupid American
company is going to make it so lame that I will have to hate it!!)
Ah the eternal debate of originality vs. Americanization. Shut the
fuck up about it. There is room to bitch, but only for extreme cases.
Honestly, dubs today are getting better. The dubbing process is
getting better. It's not completely perfect, but it's still better
than it once was. Cowboy Bebop, Fruits Basket, and Onegai Teacher are
all very good dubs in my opinion. I remember when I heard that Onegai
Teacher was licensed(Aug
2002), I was a big ass elitist that thought that all American
companies wanted to do was cash in on stuff no matter what the cost.
When I got a hold of the first DVD, I was ecstatic that the dubbing was done
well. The VA for Mizuho was absolutely perfect. Really the only
problem with today's VAs are that they fuck up on the pronunciation of the
Japanese names.
Now for the cases of crap like Love Hina, Crest of the Stars, and Initial D.
Bitch all you want. The acting was horrid. What the dubbing
companies need to know is that most anime fans want is the American voice to
match up with the Japanese voice. Doing shit like trying to emulate
the Osakan accent in Mitsune and Osaka's case was just plain stupid.
TokyoPop really dropped the ball on Initial D's dub. While the subs
were also edited a bit, it was nowhere near as bad as what they did to the
dub. Almost all of Initial D's cast was renamed with shorter shittier
names, the dialogue was stupefied with outdated American slang, Mogi's whole
story has been cut, the real engine sounds were replaced with shitty rice
engine sounds, and the great Euro-trance music was replaced with garbage
garage band crap. This sort of Americanization is just plain wrong.
While there are still some cases of bad dubbing today, when an Anime is
licensed, you won't know how it will turn out until it is released and you
see it for yourself. Just because something is licensed, doesn't
necessarily mean an American company is going to milk it for all it's worth
like Pokémon. Most anime aimed at teens and adults will get little
media exposure because most of America still thinks animation is for kids.
Oh and guess what? In Japan, they think animation is for kids too.
Message boards
- What is 1337?
1337 is an old hacker language that has been degraded to the point where to
use such a language seriously is just stupid.
1337 is the shortened version of 31337 which translates to 'Elite.'
Do not speak 1337 in the real world. Saying "I'm gonna r0x0rz j00
b0x0rz" in real life is just plain stupid.
The language itself has no definite form. Using all numbers to make a
sentence is not 1337. 1337 and 31337 are all numbers, but I accept
that. Making a whole fucking sentence out of numbers definitely not
acceptable. 1337 in the old days made sentences that were readable
using some regular letters in conjuction with symbols and numbers in place
of some of the letters.
Ex. - 1 s3|\|t 7h3 |30|\/|b t0 t|-|4t
@$$h01e. = I sent the bomb to that asshole.
The above example is just one of many ways to make a 1337
sentence. 1337 should be used only when you are joking around on the
internet in some message board or chat room.
- Why is 'the' and 'own' misspelled as 'teh' and 'pwn' constantly?
This first started as a common typo for fast typers, but it was soon
used for exaggerations and jokes.
Ex. 1 - SeX0rz teh face.
Ex. 2 - I pwned him. ^_^
As with 1337, do not use it for serious things.
DO NOT SAY 'pwn' IN REAL LIFE. IT IS 'OWN' FOR FUCKING SAKE!
- Asking for information
Before doing this, do a fucking search on a search engine. 98% of
time, you will find the fucking answer on your own. Bothering people
with stupid questions will only annoy people.
GameFAQs
- You can say 'ass' and 'gay' on these message boards!(in non derogatory
way)
- You need 150 karma to access the 'Life, Universe, and Everything' board.
(Only people with ID under 888113 and if you signed up.)
- nt = no text - used in the topic sentence to indicate that the post has no
text
