Pacific Media Expo 2004
Day 0 - After a small misunderstanding between me and my friend, we arrive at the Anaheim Convention Center and pick up the tickets for the Nami Tamaki and T.M. Revolution concert.  I go get my badge and then waited in line for the concert to start.  Our view of the stage was pretty good.  I was surprised that the arena didn't fill up.  It really didn't seem to have a lot of people coming, but it was said at the closing ceremonies that nearly 4,000 people showed up.  Nami came out first and sang four or five songs that included Believe, Realize, and Shining Star.  After her last song, there was a small intermission.  T.M. Revolution came out and sang a couple songs from his new album and his Gundam Seed song Invoke.  He also did two encore songs, one of which was Heart of Sword (used as an ending song for Rurouni Kenshin).
The audience stood up when the performers came out, and were very into the music.  It was a very good concert.

Day 1 - I wake up and eat my staple "con breakfast" of cereal bars and head into Live Programming 1 in the Hilton for the Opening Ceremonies.  On my way over, the first cosplay I see is Jiraiya from Naruto.  The line for opening ceremonies wasn't that long when I got there.  The ceremony was pretty much like AX's.  They even did the Damura eye thing.  After that I head to the exhibit hall and I see that there's a line so I just decide to line up early for the Nami Tamaki panel.  I sit down and read my NewType until they decide to let us in.  I got a seat that was right up in the front row.  I was very surprised to learn last night at the concert that she was only 15 years old, and that she would be turning 16 in a few short days on June 1.  When she came out and I could see her face much more clearly, I was still amazed that she was only 15.
My memory is getting crappier and crappier these days.  Here are some of the things I can remember from this panel:  She actually lives as a normal high school girl and a JPop Idol.  She shops, hangs out with friends, and sings karaoke while still doing concerts and making appearances.  She also said that when she goes karaoke, she sings Morning Musume.  Near the end of the panel she taught all the fans how to do a move that was in her Shining Star video.  It was the first time in a decade that I actually did anything that resembled a dance.  I was in the first row so I wasn't about to disrespect her and I participated in the lesson.  Then they played the music video and the people did the move twice.  She was very amused.  I'm sure a couple of my friends would have died laughing at the sight of me doing the move. >_>
I went the exhibit hall after the panel and scoped out all the dealers...in 25 minutes.  The exhibit hall was really small and I recognized most of the dealers.  There was really only one dealer that had something special.  I'm not sure, but the name on my receipt says they were named Boomers Orchid Ark from Alameda, CA.  Anyways, they had Final Fantasy VII Extra Knights figures.  Among them was Sephiroth!  I bought it right away.  I then decide to see if I can get to Nami's autograph session, but on my way out I notice a dealer had this huge figure of Fllay Allster from Gundam Seed.  I quickly look around and I find some more figures on the table, and I see that they also had figures of Cagalli and Lacus.  I dig the Lacus out from under other boxes of figures and buy that.  By the time I get there, it was too late so I went back to the exhibit hall to watch some wrestling.  It was two very short old-school matches.  I then went to watch some Anime in Video 3.  I was expecting to watch some Dragon Drive episodes, but instead they showed Initial D.  Some people complained I think and they tried to locate the correct DVDs, but they didn't find them.  They showed Kino no Tabi next and then Petshop of Horrors.  I left before Petshop of Horrors finished and lined up for the AMVs.  Everyone was lining up for a concert and that caused some confusion for me and a few other people.  They let us in and they showed us 5 low quality AMVs and told us that those were the only ones submitted.  They explained that they were just going to show 3 hours of classic AMVs, and they would show us an X-rated AMV that was also submitted after midnight.  Tainted Doughnuts, Mitternacht, Chibi Things that Kill, and Through Time Through Space were among the ones shown.  Some of the ones I haven't seen and liked were Restored Pieces, Elvis vs. Anime, and this one AMV of Revolutionary Girl Utena done to Britney Spear's Baby, One More Time.  The last two shown was a Card Captor Sakura AMV and a Perfect Blue AMV.  The girl announced that the CCS AMV would contain yaoi, but she obviously meant yuri since it had Sakura kissing Tomoyo.  The Perfect Blue video just had some tit shots, and it was an okay video.

Day 2 - I kind of debated whether I should attend Nightow's panel and ultimately decided to attend to see if I could win a sketch.  I didn't win but the panel was entertaining.  I don't really remember much.  I think he said his favorite character to draw was Wolfwood.  He also told us a little bit about Gungrave and that he was a fan of pro-wrestling.  Oh, and he said that he drew many famous American celebrities as characters in Gungrave.  After the panel, I went back to scope out the exhibit hall again.  I also watched another two matches.  There was quite a difference this time.  They took much more bumps and even went outside the ring.  I was surprised they did a suplex on the concrete.  One guy tried to land a moonsault, but the other guy moved out of the way.  He later set the guy up and landed a shooting star press.  I've been a fan of wrestling ever since Smackdown started airing.  I was even more impressed with the simple bumps when I watched these guys wrestle in person.  The second match was also entertaining, but not as much as the first one.  I attended the Masanori panel next.  PMX was his first convention in the U.S. and he really didn't know what to do for the panel.  The panel was a very serious one that had many questions about the animation industry.    Not very many attended and I thought that would increase my chance for a sketch.  He had already pre-drawn 3 sketches and I wasn't among the 3 chosen tickets.  Straight after the panel I got in line for the next one with Chrno Crusade mangaka Moriyama Daisuke.  He also had presented a very entertaining panel.  His manager stood behind all through the panel.  The manager looked like he was into the Goth style.  During the panel he said that he decided to become a manga creator after he received some advice from Nightow.  He was really happy with the three people that cosplayed as characters from Chrno Crusade.  He also said that Chrno is sort of like himself because he doesn't really have that much confidence in himself.  I didn't win a sketch in this panel either.  After this panel, I watched Kaze no Yojimbo and Witch Hunter Robin episodes in Video 3.  Then I went to grab a seat for the Masquerade.
They showed some AMVs first, then Secret Secret sang two songs, and then one more AMV before finally starting.  I thought it was a little weird that only one (big) group did Naruto for the Masquerade.  UCLA had two groups that did different skits dressed as Naruto characters.  The first one was like a parody of Battle Royale Naruto-style.  The second one was an explanation for the Hidden Leaf name which included the Yatta song.  That was really good.  Another nice one was a group called Sailor Jamboree sang 3 songs from Sailor Moon Live Action and Anime and lip synced a fourth song.  Dressed in Sailor Scout costumes of course.  The Best of Show award went to a group that did a skit about the Shinsengumi I think.  They had a nice skit too.
The crowd heckled the host throughout the Masquerade much like AX 03's host.  He handled the crowd very well, and I thought he had a better attitude than AX 03's host too.

Day 3 -  The parking lot was pretty deserted when I arrived.  I didn't really expect many people to show up for the last day.  I went around the exhibit hall one last time and ended up buying 3 box figures of the Final Fantasy and one of Gundam Seed.  I also bought the box set of the first season of Rurouni Kenshin.  I thought it was the second season, but when they took it out, I saw that it was the first and just decided to take it anyways.  I then make my way to the Charity Auction and see if they have something I might like.  Thankfully, they didn't have anything that interested me.  If they had something from Naruto, Kanon, or Fruits Basket, I would have had major problems with explaining about my unorthodox purchase of a simple useless item to my father. >_>
City of Hope was able to raise around $22,000 from PMX.
Closing ceremonies were held after and they announced that PMX would be held over Labor Day weekend in 2005.  T.M. Revolution couldn't make it to the ceremony because he had to hold his press conference at that time.  The four other Guests of Honor made their closing statements and the con was over.

According to them, a little over 4,000 people came to PMX.  Fanime probably hurt PMX's attendance the most.  I was surprised that this con was even able to get a hold of these great Guests of Honor.
Something they should do next year is to invite an Iron Chef to be a Guest of Honor.  That would kick ass.
It would also be really good if Tofu Records could get Ayumi-sama to do a concert here.  ^_^
